Blackout, as national grid collapses again

National grid collapses

Drops to near zero

Electricity supply across the country was disrupted on Monday following another collapse of the national grid, resulting in a steep fall in power generation.

According to reports, the grid went down around 3p.m, plunging many Nigerians into darkness.

The cause of the collapse could not be immediately confirmed. However, it occurred at a time when the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) was making efforts to ramp-up generation following recent gas constraints caused by pipeline vandalism.

Figures obtained from the NISO showed that generation dropped dramatically from 2,052.37 megawatts (MWs) to 139.92MW within one hour, between 2p.m and 3p.m.

The system failure also affected distribution, as only three out of the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) were able to take power from the grid during the period.

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) loaded 80MWs, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Benin Electricity Distribution Company each received 20MWs.

According to NISO data, all other DisCos -including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola – recorded zero allocation, cutting off supply to their coverage areas.

As of the time of filing this report, all 22 power plants connected to the grid had lost generation.
